The Little Red Riding Hood Coat

It’s a running joke — with a lot of truth to it — that Montrealers need a different coat for every 10 degrees of temperature. While our winters can be bitterly cold, they can also be unexpectedly mild, and everything in between.

I have an ultra-warm puffy coat for the really cold weather. And a whole bunch of spring jackets for different temperatures. But I’d been looking for a good in-between coat for those warmer winter days, say, between zero and minus-ten.

Which is why I was so excited when I was able to pick up this wool duffel coat by Tommy Hilfiger from Macy’s on Black Friday long weekend — for a screamingly good deal. In the US, it’s billed as a winter coat. But here in Montreal, it’s not quite warm enough for the coldest winter days, but it’s a great in-between coat for those warmer stretches.

The coat is a lovely red colour, with a plaid-trim hood and peacoat-style buttons. In a size Petite Small, it’s almost a perfect fit. Amazingly, it falls at exactly the right place at the waist and shoulders, and is only ever-so-slightly too long on the sleeves (I’ve rolled them once).

Besides, I’ve always wanted a coat that makes me feel like a cross between Paddington Bear and Little Red Riding Hood. I mean, who wouldn’t, right?

Coat: Tommy Hilfiger Petite, Size PS, $85 (Black Friday deal)
Boots: Blondo, Size 6M, $245
